I heard that you are not supposed to do art projects. and just to use a pen only when you need them. am I understanding this right? what is the reasoning behind it?
no crayons, markers, glueing? etc?

You are not allowed to do any melacha on chol hamoed, just like YT, unless:
1. it's tzorchei rabbim (needed for the community)
2. it's tzorech YT (needed for chol hamoed/ YT, but there are exceptions such as laundry, sewing, taking a haircut)
3. poel she'ain lo ma l'echol (a worker who doesn't have anything to eat)
4. tzorchei mitzva
(check these out b/c I'm not sure I've remembered correctly)
You are not allowed to do any drawing, writing, crafts etc - but little children, who get pleasure from it are allowed to. You are also allowed to write for one of the above mentioned categories eg to write a shopping list to buy food you need for chol hamoed.

I used to tell my students I wouldn't grade their tests during Chol Hamoed as the only writing I do is on a check or a credit card receipt  They understood THAT!!
