whip a non-dairy topping, then mix some more with an instant choco pudding powder packet. its not that great, but it'll do.

you can always buy a package of pudding and cook it with 1/2 pareve milk and 1/2 water - but I would put in less than the amount of liquid to make it thicker for a filling ...
as for the frosting over that
1/3 cup crisco
2/3 cup cocoa
1/3 cup pareve milk (do NOT add water)
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups confectionery sugar
whip it up - whip it good
you can add more sugar to make it thicker or more pareve milk to make it smoother if you need to for spreadability ...
p.s. you can use as a filling too ...

any instant choco pudding mix will work - mix it in mixer together with the whipped topping

Why not water? I always use water in my icing; it helps it crust.

icing & frosting are two different things
water & oil don't mix ... so it won't work for frosting ...

You can make an easy pudding filling as follows:
2 pkg. chocolate INSTANT pudding
2-3/4 cups cold Parve milk
1 cup coconut flakes (optional)
Pour milk into large bowl. Add dry pudding mixes.
Beat with electric wire whisk 2 minutes or until well blended. (Mixture will be thick.)
Stir in 1 cup of the coconut.

I'm so sorry I wasn't around to answer ...
I hope it came out a yummy birthday treat ...
but the reason I mentioned cooking is because I don't use the instant pudding but the regular pudding ...
