My 3 yr old boy has a terrific habit of just falling asleep almost anywhere in the middle of the afternoon. He generally goes to sleep around 7 but does wake up around 6 AM.
By the time he comes from playgroup he is cranky and can really use it. But the nights when he took a nap in the afternoon, he ends up staying up til 10 PM, so to what benefit was the nap? Should I stop him from falling asleep in the afternoon?

I would keep my son busy in the afternoons so that he won't fall asleep if taking naps makes him fall asleep so late.

Totally. If my 3 year old even closes his eyes for a minute in the afternoon, he is up til at least 10 or 11. It is not worth it. Plus then the next day he is tired... its a vicious cycle.
Try not letting him nap for a few days and see what happens.
