Yup. We were there. Its really nice, not too far. You have the old mansions and the ocean too. There is also a minyan at the touro shul. Make sure to check when it is before since they only have one it was 7 in the morning and if you miss that one...

a few years ago my dh went to this place
http://www.felicitaresort.com/.
its in pensylvania, not exactly a resort, the rooms are a bit motelly, but very clean and neat.

as far as food:
u can request a fridge in ur room and they have an area for bbqs and a pop up sukkah.

as far as activities:
the "resort" has some beautiful gardens and hiking trails - not sure if octobers the weather for that though
they have a nice golf course if ur into that
not so great basketball court, and tennis court,
the spa is small but very pleasant if ur into massages, facials ... nothing too dramatic.

hershy park, crayon factory ... are all close by

as far as minyan:
its a 1/2 hr drive to hartford where theres a small frum community and minyan - not much else though

they dont seem to be thrilled bout having kids running around but im sure theyll all make cutesy faces at a little baby

do I sound like an advertisement?
well im not getting kickbacks but we had a great time there so I think u might too.

2-3 days is plenty for Newport. You could do a search for the different mansions. We went to the tourist info when we got there and made our plans like that. Its basically the Touro Shul and the mansions.
