You know those "make $3,000 a week working at home" ads? Well, I opened one (I think). And somehow (& I have no idea how) I have lost over the past 3 months $254.37 from my account.

So the bank has stopped my debit card. DH thinks it was the above type of "offer" but AFAIK, I never gave my debit card #. The guy from the fraud dept said it looks like a scam & reimbursed my claim. But if it turns out it was genuine (ha!) or the bank can't verify the scam Crying or Very sad I'll lose it again.

I never received any goods or services...no wine of the month, no magazine subscriptions or anything. Please check your bank statements very carefully. I just spent 45 minutes on the phone sorting it out. Mad

Caveat Emptor. Except I never caveated Rolling Eyes Embarassed Evil or Very Mad

wow! it's a good thing you were reimbursed.
what got into a level headed person like you to open such an ad?

Oy, that sounds horrible. I'm sorry to hear bubby. Possibly the ad was loaded with spyware/trojan horse--it could be recording what websites you access and what keys you hit (to get passwords). Did you use the same computer to do online banking?

That's what I can't figure out. My DH is quite upset with me...I just hope it was only my card that was compromised & not the whole account.

grin...level-headed? Obviously not, but thanks for the compliment anyway.

Mrs Bissli...what is spyware/trojan horse??? Embarassed Embarassed I must be really stoopid Sad

I'm not a computer expert so anyone correct me if I'm wrong. Spyware is a programme that installs iself on to your PC and records data (including keyboard strokes you enter) and often transmits/forwards to another machine/server. Trojan Horse is also a similar one, often used by hackers to control someone else's PC remotely. Unlike virus, it doesn't destry PC but makes your PC unsafe in terms of security and personal data protection.

recently my bank sent me a new debit card saying that a certain business had all the cards that customers used compromised ... so they did not take any chances ... only they wouldn't say what business ...

wouldn't believe the letter so I went into the bank which verified that indeed only debit cards used at specific business had to be changed ... my dd uses same bank and they did not change hers

maybe you're just the first one reporting a discrepancy ... hopefully the matter will be cleared ...

Did you open an attachment? Otherwise, those emails can't just install anything. You have to open an attachment to install a file.

Also, why would they only take 250 over three months? What do the charges read as?

Do you have any kind of protection on your computer, a firewall, for example?

Beware: many websites that you order merchandise from, will spit out a thank you page after your order is complete. On that page you will see blinking ads, or innocent looking blue links that can say ‘thank you for your order. You qualify for additional 10% savings, click here” or something innocuous like that. Clicking it legally entitles the third party advertiser to bill you for a ‘membership’ which can entitle you to future savings of their club. The reason they have your credit card info is because it gets transmitted to them with the same click-action as the website sale. Trust me, I know the industry. I work in it. : (

What? Clicking on an ad legally obligates you to pay membership fees and they can just charge it to your account? I don't think sooooo. Check with someone who is a real attorney, but that sounds like classic fraud. There aint nothing legal about a "silent" contract like that one. In fact, almost any contract where two parties have not had a meeting of the minds on what they are agreeing to is voidable by the harmed party...

The ads have small asterisk, with lots of fine print "by clicking this link you are entitled to a $19.95 membership for our special savings club yada yada" you'll be surprised how little they need to do to comply with the law!

yes, if an ad has small print and you do not read it, the onus may be on you.

Still, I would argue that this is a very triable case. I would certainly take it to court as an attorney as you could easily argue that the contract language does not indicate you will be charged for anything. So if a senior citizen reads that he is entitled to something, that would not imply to him that he may be charged automatically. I would absolutely take it to a court.

I think what Shaklee says may be what happened, but for my $84.79 every month, (only 3 months, B"H) I didn't receive anything, so what am I supposed to have agreed to pay for? Even the bank fraud guy agreed it looked scammy.

Marina, are you a lawyer? Oh, & I'm not a Senior (yet!) & they probably can't be found anyway. But if get them, they're dead!
