tackle one corner of one room at a time: Rome wasn't burned in a day, you know!
company on the way? do what I did when I was a teen: throw everything into big black garbage bags and shove them into hampers and closets and under the beds until the company leaves. If asked, you can claim to be doing an indoor composting project. Which will be no lie if you leave everything in the bags forever.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm by nature a messy person.
DH recently told me that he doesnt enjoy coming home & therefore comes home late from work cuz he cant handle the mess.
I'm working very hard to clean up, but I'll always find myself lazying away after just taking care of 2-3 things

I can get like that sometimes.
See if you can get everyone out of the house for an hour. Run around putting everything back in place. One room at a time. Then use a multi-surface spray to clean all dirty surface tops.
Once everything is in order, you can start with the laudry when everyone is in bed tonight. And you can do the dishes then.
Try to put together a dinner tonight that does not involve cooking or messing up, or bake something in disposable pans in the oven.
Good luck! _________________ Really Awesome Mom!

HAHA! You need the BIG size garbage bags!
first get the floor clean then do one room at a time. forget the laundry for now- folding it is so much more pleasant when the house is clean.

GOOD WILL! (Or charity of your choice.) We decluttered every drawer in the house. Several times. Now every single item in the house is something we use, or greatly cherish. Toys, clothes, dishes, everything got heavily decluttered. Laundry is easier; it can't pile up because we pretty much each have an 8-day wardrobe! Toys are a piece of cake. Three things that come in sets (blocks, trains, K'nex), and one small box of miscellaneous. Plus board games in their own cupboard.
Setting timers also helps me. I set the timer for 5 minutes and clean all the mirrors in the house (well, there are only 3!). Every night, we set the timer for 15 minutes and together clean up all the kids' bedrooms/play room/learning area and the kitchen floor/table. Fun and fast. Everyone zooms around so we can beat the timer. It's really amazing how much you can accomplish in 15 minutes when you move FAST! Good exercise too.

If my house would be flying right now, I'd make sure it lands in Florida on a nice spot on the beach.
Just kidding, OP, wanted to lighten the mood, mine at least. _________________ Because it's good!

I sweep everything in all the main rooms (living room, hall, etc,) into a big pile. Then I get the kids to sort through - putting toys away, dirty laundry where it belongs, trash into the trash can and I sweep the dust into the dustpan. It all looks much nicer when it's swept!
I also make sure to make DH's and my beds every day. _________________ DD 9

Hahahaha!
As a flybaby, I thought you meant the exact opposite!
Sorry to hear. Have you tried Flylady's crisis cleaning? When I end up following it, I feel a bit more organized.
