| |
Long story short, our building will be without gas (stoves, ovens) and hot water for the next few days, and we can't use microwaves b/c of some voltage thing. (Last night, I smelled gas. Con Ed found a major gas leak PLUS a carbon monoxide problem.) B"H everyone is OK.
But now I'm racking my brain: What can I cook for Shabbos? I can't keep anything warm during the day on Shabbos. Boring sandwiches, sandwiches and more sandwiches? It's going to be freezing here anyway, and DH and I were looking forward to "comfort food" this weekend. . .
Any recipe ideas would be most appreciated!!

You can marinate chicken cutlets and keep them in the fridge until 20 minutes or so before Shabbos, at which point you can grill them. When they are ready, wrap them in silver foil, and then tighty wrap that in towels to keep warm for the Friday night meal.
Use the cold leftovers for Shabbos day. Cut them into strips and throw them on top of a salad.
You can also grill salmon tomorrow, and eat it cold on Shabbos.
You can do grilled veggies too.
I guess the starch can be Challah.
Do you have take-out near you? If you're in Brooklyn, I can lend you my electric plata, and you can warm up the food on there.

Thank you so much for the wonderful ideas!! Thank you also for your kind offer. I think I'll try the tin foil and towels idea. I am so appreciative. Todah Rabah!

If you can spend a little money, buy an inexpensive slow cooker -- you can pick one up for under $20 at Target. Make soup for Shabbat lunch -- chop up an onion, add two cans of black beans (blended), one can black beans (whole), one can chopped tomatoes, one can corn (drained), 2 cups chicken broth, salt, pepper, garlic. Or even cholent. Then you can place anything else on top of the lid to warm up.
Use paper plates and plastic cutlery until you have hot water.
And make some good friends who will let you shower at their place.
Shabbat shalom.
