I just tasted really good homemade onion rolls. They were rolled jelly roll fashion (in small sizes), with onions inside, topped with sesame seeds.
Does anyone have a recipe for me?

I have an onion roll recipe that is just topped with onions, but I don't think you're interested...am I correct? I wonder if you could just use the dough and topping and roll it like a jelly roll yourself...

I have made onion rolls like that. Roll out dough (like a challah dough) into a big circle. Shmear with oil and sprinkle with minced onion (the kind that comes in a spice jar - the onions get soft and good after being baked and being next to the oil that you shmeared). Slice the dough like a pizza, and roll up each triangle. At that point, you could brush them with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Sorry if my directions are a little fuzzy, I haven't done it in a while.

There's a great onion roll recipe in the Spice and Spirit. You could probably roll it up.

This is what I do for my topped onion rolls:
4-5 C flour
3 TBSP sugar
1 tsp salt
2 packages yeast (4.5 tsp)
1.5 C very warm water
1/4 C margarine (I use oil)
1 small onion diced
1/4 C oil

Preheat oven to 425.
Mix 3 cups of flour with the dry ingredients.
Add the water and margarine (oil). Knead till smooth and let rise for 15 minutes.
Mix onion and oil together in small bowl.
Shape into small balls and top with onion mixture. Cut X or tic tac toe pattern into rolls and bake for about 25 minutes.

I'm sure you can take the dough and fill it and roll it up jelly roll style and brush with egg and sesame, but when I make this recipe, it's because I want something quick and not so patchka-ey Wink

Thanks everyone!
The woman who made them said she would give me the recipe sometime this week. She used her regular challah recipe, and added more sugar.
They were really good, and the onions were seasoned as well. Can hardly wait to make them.
