I'm looking for something yummy to bring back to UK. Babka, whatever, but NO cheese cake or cream pastries that's unlikely to survive a transatlantic flight. Any recommendations (and please designate in which neighbourhood)? Either Manhattan or Brooklyn would do.

Oh, and if anyone wants things from UK please PM me (non perishables only) within the next 7 days.

You can keep cheesecake in your check-in lugage, as it gets very cool out there it won't go bad.

Ostrovitsky Bakery
(718) 951-7924
Flatbush/Midwood
1201 Ave J
Brooklyn, NY 11230

We had guests that brought us a meltaway cake from there once and it was the most delicious thing ever! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Everythign there is really excellent.

Another vote though for melt away cake from ostroviskys if you go for that kind of thing.

I'm seconding the vote for Schreiber's. When I lived in NY, I used to get a sweet roll for lunch... yum... (and one time, my friend left hers on the counter and a squirrel bit through the screen window and took it!!)

I would likewise recommend Schreibers on Avenue M between Nostrand and 31st. Everything there is out of this world!

Schreibers is great! they have a location in 14th and 42nd as well. Kemach Yoshon
Weiss has amazing nut rugelach. Ave M and E 13th and in 13th ave and 50th I think. Kemach Yoshon
Shloimis on 16th and 44th. great sandwich cake.
There is a brand of chocolate rugelach (I think sterns) that they sell in grocery stores in a great package for traveling. DH always takes one when traveling.

From england we can always use good scones!
Have a nice trip

Thank you all very much for suggestions. They all sound wonderful--can't wait! DH suggesting I should dedicate my entire carry-on bag just for pastries...
