what is standard treatment for a pink eye?

my pediatrician says to leave it alone. He says most cases are viral not bacterial. Usually I put on a cotton ball soaked in warm water/tea and the eye will get better. If it doesn't with in a few days then I wuold go to the dr for a prescription of antibiotics (cream).
