Entropy, interesting. Someone told me that her son (family doesn't have clear mesorahs) asked a noted rav about upsherin and he said it's become minhag hamakom. Even his own grandchildren have had the upsherin because it's become so de riguer. That said, I guess that living where we do we could get away without it. (We're not yekkish so maybe not germaine. And btw, do yekkes find the term yekke distasteful?)

Yup. My dh plan to write them to say there are definitely a minority of Yekkes who have this tradition, without any contact to Israel or to chassidus. Even google brings up stuff about some communities doing vimpel AND haircut.

BTW, did you know that wimpel was originally a minhag in all Ashkenazic communities and after the Chmelnitzki massacres the Eastern European communities dropped it?

Wow, didn't know! Then it makes sense even more.

Why did they drop it at that point?

IIRC, it was felt that it was too inappropriately happy.

Thanks so much, Ruchel!!!
My grandfather wrote the Furth article--he is now over 91, b'li ayin hara. He recently sent me tapes of his life, narrated by him, so that I should type it up. I'm working on it, too slowly.

I don't understand how you rule out contact with EY and/or Chassidus.

I just found a site saying the wimpel started being widespread "around 1500" (which sounds right) "in Spain and in Italy". Which sounds weird because Jews had already been expulsed of Spain, and I don't know of any Sefardim who do it, and the only Italian Jews who do it are Yekke...

The site quotes a certain Antonin of Regensberg who wrote "Jews' Faith" in 1530 and mentions the wimpel. First Jewish source is the Maharil.

This site mentions wimpel and haircut http://www.wimpel.org/history.html
