Interested in a job and dh is acquainted with a person who is influential in the organization. What would be the best way to ask him for help or a good word?

Exactly as you just did. Ask him if he can take your resume & put in a good word...& ask him to review the resume first!

Call DH's friend up and see if you can make an appointment. You get to learn more about the company/position and get to sell your skills/resume. If he/she's really high up in the organisation and seems too busy, ask who would be the right person to contact. Then contact that person saying DH's friend refered you. Sometimes a resume left with a big macher can remain on his/her inbox...
