Well Ruchel, it's an Israeli national thing. First they gave "new" and not "golus" names, that was across the board, both frum and frei if they were Zionists. Now with the DLs they give names of "meaning" usually with religious zionist kind of sounds often using the name of the Lord in them..."shvut-el" "pdut-el" "bat-el" rinat-yah" "hoda-ya" etc.
No I don't agree, but if everyone around you almost without exception is doing it, you don't want your kids to stand out calling them Shraga or Yirmiyahu or Yehezkel . Sure you have the usual Moshe's and David's and Sarah's and Rivka's and then you know it is usually for a parent. For a grandparent? Most DLs I know wouldn't give it and certainly not as a first name.
I agree with you. It drives me crazy. But I don't exactly have a say in it. The whole country's ethos is based on youth, youth culture, not in the western sense but in the youth movement sense. Revolution against parents. Doing something new, and national. Everything has to be national...unless of course you are DL light and then you want to give names that will go well abroad. Tohm and Din (which become Tom and Dean) and Rebecca (not Rivka, but Rebekka as they call it) etc.
So sad considering that among the best names given today among Gentiles in America you will find David and Sarah and Jacob...
So one way around it at least it to give an acronym. If you have Reuven Ephraim Meir you can give "re'em" or something like that. No it's not the original name but DL Israelis are NOT big on Golus minhogim whatsoever. It's the nature of the country. People should know in advance and not be disappointed. The whole country after all was founded on revolution against golus. So the revolution continues... _________________ "Olam Chessed Yiboneh", Tehilim 89.

My own uncle was forced to take an Israeli surname for his job, once upon a time... now he regrets...
Pedut you find here, Batel, Rina, Hodaya are common. In charedi circles too. But if there is someone to name for, then it's, I dunno Pedut Rivka, or Hodaya Sheyna (at worst a translation like Yaffa or a close sounding like Shana) or whatever. BH BH.

Most came either to escape racism, bad memories... or to start a new life in a Jewish place, and davka not to drop the Jewish stuff they grew up with (I mean the observant ones).
