Ok so here goes

my baby is bh 4 weeks and everytime I put him down in his bed he sleeps for about 5 minutes and then wakes up , so I rock him untill he falls asleep again and then he wakes up again . If I'm in another room and it takes me a few seconds too long to get to him he crys so much that he wakes himself up and I take him out untill he's calm enough to go to sleep. If he sleeps with me - like during the night he sleeps beautifully but when he's on his own.......................... Is this normal - the poor kid is so tired - doesn't get a good stretch of sleep , who can I talk to about this - can I talk to the doc or do any of you guys have any ideas.......... thanks

Yes, this is very normal for a newborn. You can try swaddling, or wearing him so at least your hands are free. As tiring as it is, he'll grow out of it! Wink

swaddling really helps. you can buy one peice swaddlers that velcro, they are amazing! or if you really need a break, let him sleep in a baby swing that rocks gently. it'll keep him sleeping.
you could try also, soft music or white noise near his crib. The book "the happiest baby on the block has great ideas too. it's a quick easy read.
mazel tov. and good luck.

I second this. Completely worth the money.

Speak to your dr about the rocking. if the baby starts to depends on it, he won't learn how to put himself to sleep. that's worse for you.

a 4 week old will not get spoiled. Do whatever you can in order to minimize crying and maximize sleep.
If the baby gets overtired, then he/she will sleep even worse.

swaddling, try swings, stroller, baby wearing, sleeping together..obviously you have to find what works for your family. I actually would have to put my dd in a totally quiet room during the day with minimal light, in her infant carrier in the stroller, and let her "CIO" which amounted to 1-2 min, which I did as a last resort and didn't feel bad about since it could easily take that long to change ds's diaper or get him lunch, etc.

Also, I stopped waking her up to eat...bc for her, that just made it worse (more overtired)

it is very common. with my youngest I found that she was more comffy in her car seat so I let her sleep there. it may be a bad idea for some babies cause its hard to get them out of it but it worked great for my B'H. swaddling may not work for all babies. but its worth trying everything. you need to get used to your baby and figure eachother out
