Behind the walls by Miriam Cohen is a true story about a girl in a convent during the Holocaust, not exactly a family saga (unfortunately) but thick and very good!
Sun inside rain, not sure who it's by, but also thick and follows the lives of a few individuals who are connected
Those are two lengthy Jewish novels that come to mind that are worth reading.

I like these also.
Not exactly the same janre but a nice thick book - Carter Beats the Devil. I really liked it, great story great charactors. Didn't like his second novel Sunnyside as much, all the pieces didn't fit in the puzzle at the end and it seemes like sloppy editting and a whole bunch of stories that would stand great each alone.

I'm becoming a little frustrated.
You reminded me of this really great book, I think it had the word brothers in the title and it was about 2 brothers from a specific family, throughout a few generations. One still in Poland or Russia, then one generation during the war in Germany and one in England, then one post war in Russia. Throughout the novel, you kept following 2 brothers with their different attitudes and approaches to what was going on around them.
But google hasnt helped me find the book. It's so annoying.

Someone here once mentioned a website where you can insert a book that you liked and it will generate similar titles that you might enjoy. Anyone? I would love to know it.

I really loved the book "the help"...it's sort of saga-like. it takes place in the south, and it follows black maids and the white families they serve through the years. I couldn't put the thing down!

For a long, family saga type book, try these two authors:
Rosamunde Pilcher (Shellseekers and Coming Home were wonderful)
Maeve Binchy
I loved reading all the suggestions posted! I have a nice book list now...thank you!
(I also loved The Help)
