Since it's not a yom tov where it's a mitzva to have a seuda, we have to have a party and eat? Confused Smile

It's nice time for the family to get together. on yomtov it's hard for families to get together. on chanukah you can push strollers, travel... it's just a nice time to get together. we do it motzei shabbos, a melaveh malkah never needs an excuse.

My family does make a chanukah party, but for us, b"h, we have a lot of family get togethers because b"h we have a lot of smachot (what's the plural of simcha?).

Just as you said: smachot. Unless of course you;re talking about a set of first cousins, all named for their late grandfather Simcha, in which case they are "the Simchas". Like the Simpsons or the Sopranos, lehavdil.

Huh? I can't have a party w/a meal unless it's Shabbat/Yom Tov/wedding/bris/etc?

The kids are off from school, we're celebrating a miracle -- that's not a good enough reason to have a little party?
