how do I get my 17 month old to sleep through the night? he waked up every few hours screaming and we pat him/give bottle/paci/tell him we love him
but I have a newborn so this is getting really hard
any advice?

you could try not giving him attention/bottles/pacifiers (progressively, of course)
but if the child is used to getting these things at night, there is no reason to stop doing so until you stop providing these things.
at 17 months, they don't need any of those things at night, and you will only get more rest through this change.
