I would otherwise buy what fits in the fridge; like a bag at a time, but with the yomtov cooking I bought 10 lbs!
Purple onion are bought a few at a time, though.

Are you supposed to keep onions in the fridge?

I don't think you "have" to. I'm in a new apt and right now, that's where the onions fit.

White onions or red/purple ones?
I store my onions under my sink, not in fridge and I don't buy more than a bag at a time, of each.

I always like to have plenty of onions on hand, so I usually buy a bag, and also some loose ones. (At the store near me, the bags usually have smaller onions, and I like to have large ones available for when I need lots of onions!)
I keep them on the counter - keeping them under the sink will probably make them rot faster.

you shouldn't store lots of stuff under the fridge; it's wet and humid in there.

I think they are supposed to be stored in a cool dry place. Under the sink is probably a bit damp, and so is the fridge.
But whatever works for you till now!

I find that keeping them in the fridge cut down on the tears when I peel them.

yea I heard that too, if you keep the onions in the fridge they won't make you tear as much. my mom also told me not to keep potatoes and onions together because the chemicals in the onion makes potatoes rot faster.
