I am realizing I really need help knowing what styles look best on me - I am short and no longer the skinny newlywed I was 20+ years ago! I guess I am more of an "apple" shape and I have read that I should avoid long skirts and should try for v-neck or low necklines, but I am confused how to dress tzniusly and appropriately for my shape/age without looking frumpy! (For specifics, I am 5' and usually wear a size 8 skirt and a M or L top).
Are there websites out there that could help or imamothers that could clue me in? I am not comfortable going to a department store and using a personal shopper b/c explaining tznius is just too complicated and I am a bit embarrassed that I am in my 40s and don't know how to dress myself! I don't live in the NY area, so that also complicates shopping. I have wound up with lots of "separates" (especially black skirts!) but am sure that not all of them are flattering.
TIA

You can get the V neckline effect with a white or light beige scarf at the neckline. Keep the color, brightness, detail and interest up high, near your face.
You might avoid a sharply defined waist. No interesting belts, perhaps.
Tights and shoes that match your skirt in color will give length.
I would keep it all simple, not a lot of pattern.
I would avoid interest and contrast at the wrist.
Keep your hair in scale: not too much or too long. Smooth might be better than curly. Shiny would be good, you want interest high up. Highlights might be good. Bright earrings. Rosy cheeks.
There is nothing wrong with being constructed on the small plan.
Here is a link. I have not used them.

Thank you! What styles of tops do you recommend? I try to avoid wide skirts and know I shouldn't wear them below calf length, but I am always stumped by the tops - I don't want them to be tight fitting to my body, but if they are loose I sometimes wind up looking wide.

Tailored jackets? You could have quite a collection of various jackets to wear over your black skirts. The jacket length would have to be experimented with.
You would want little detail and bulk, keeping the focal point the neckline area.
Here is a blazer. Note the measurements before you order. People often wear these unbuttoned, over a black blouse or knit top, which has continuity with the skirt. No belt.

You can always have the tailor shorten sleeves on anything including shirts.
In leathers, always avoid a shiny or calf finish. Only use suede finish. You want matte, non-reflecting surfaces. Your hair, lipstick and earrings can shine though.
For simchas, use lace, any color, with metallic or sequins, at the neckline.
When you find something that really works for you, get several, in several colors and several in black. Things are discontinued and then it is heartache. Overbuy what is really useful. You will be set for years.
