I've heard of it. Supposedly to pull the Neshama back down, because before Yaakov's time people would literally expire with a sneeze.
Don't know the source. I personally don't do it.

An eastern European Holocaust survivor told me she learned it from home and its significance is loosely something like what Hadassa said. It is an action to show you are still alive since the sneeze is considered that one has passed away for a moment. I don't do it ; )

I thought it was only if you sneeze in a cemetery. I sneezed at my grandfather's funeral and a great aunt all but tugged my ear off.

My family pulls up our left ear every time we sneeze. I am convinced that, having had allergies as a kid, my left ear is more Spock-like than the right.

I have close family members who do it, although personally I don't.
I have a friend who tugs her ear and says a posuk whilst doing so, but I've never asked her what it is she says..

I just remembered that although some family members do it for every sneeze, they say that you "have to" do it if you sneeze after mentioning the name of someone who passes away.

My husband once told me that the Lubavitcher Rebbe was seen doing it and then he sort of shrugged his sholders saying something about his mother used to do it and you don't laugh off a mother's (and here I don't remember the expression used, I'll ask my husband later).
