My son has always had a sensitive gag.
I find he vomits from crying, from a post nasal drip, and from random unexplainable things.
In this week alone he has thrown up too many times to count. He has a cold so I am guessing it is the post nasal drip. But I think he also knows now how to throw up and he kind of forces it. The vomit noise will come out of him and then I will rush him to nearest sink/garbage and he will start. I always ask are you done? And he tends to say no (and hes crying when he throws up) and he knows because more does come up.

He is supposed to start camp this summer and I have no idea how I can send him anywehre with the amount he vomits.

I asked pediatrician if my son has reflux and he didnt seem to feel it was that. He gave me a script for an anti reflux medication and said I can try a month and see if throwing up stops but I dont want to medicate my son unless we know its what he needs....unless the medication for reflux is not a big deal and no side effects....dh thinks we need a gastro doctor.
What should I do.

If part of it is something he does on purpose maybe you can reward him for not throwing up. I don't know if this is a good idea medically but I know for kids who throw up when crying if they stop crying they won't throw up. It's not like they ate poison and need to throw up. although it's not fun for him to through up there might be something psychologically that he gets out of it.

Maybe try rewarding him for not throwing up and see how it effect his throw up for that week. Obviously if he's sick and throwing up for that reason there isn't anything he can do about it.

Just a thought.

good point. Maybe first start a food diary to see if he throws up after certain foods then start eliminating and see if it helps.

OP my DD has the same exact thing. I'm afraid of her throwing tantrums cuz I know she'll vomit & I'll have to clean up. Dr advised I should see an ENT Specialist since she always has a runny nose or a post nasal drip which might be causing the vomiting.

OP
no I havent eliminated foods because he is extremely picky as it is so his diet doesnt consist of a lot.
dairy is his mainstay. he loves his choc milk - prob 3 cups per day.
would seeing an allergist help? I did have him tested once a while ago and nothing came up on the arm test.

as far as talking to him....I really dont think he would get it yet. I dont think he is mature enough to have a conversation with about trying to stop....but I do think he knows how to force the throw up to come....
the other day I was frosting a cake. for fun I put some on a spoon and called him over to taste it. but because it was so messy I said open up and I will feed you. he opened his mouth and I think I touched the tip of his tongue when he gagged. and then threw up all over the kitchen floor.
today I offered him something to eat, I forgot what. I put it in his hand I think when he gagged and threw up. I remember thinking that was out of nowhere he hadnt even eaten it yet.
and then today he was cranky and needing to nap so he was yelling and crying (not hard, just like whiney) and gagged and threw up all over.

My oldest had this and it was driving us crazy. We never figured out what it was, but he outgrew it. He is now a teen. None of my other kids had this issue B"H.

When you say 'throw up' is it a whole lot? My son gags too & whenever he has a lot of phlem he has the. Issue of throwing up (but its not a lot & only when he's coughing or crying) the Dr said if it only happens when he has a cold or nasal drip -its his way of getting the phlem out. But if its happening with your ds more often I'd wanna take him to a gastro dr to clear a/t going on.
Good Luck!

1-see a gastro
2-lots of ear infections can come from reflux
3-(this is for the gastro) there is something called cyclyc vomiting syndrome

my 1 year old throws up if he doesn't get his reflux meds for a day or 2....

I HAve a similar problem with my dd. trip to the gastro was not much help. A therapist recommended giving her probiotics daily to balance out her digestive system, and I make sure she doesn't eat or drink lying down. I also am looking into finding out the name of a specialist that my friends went to- after visiting many drs hewas the one that finally diagnosed her son with allergies. Once they eliminated certain foods from his diet he stopped throwing up. Op are you in the ny area?

My son did this for months, it was a allergy to something in the juice I was giving him. I would suggest a good allergist.
