My son is now 2.8 yrs. He was born with a tiny skin tag on his ear lobe. My insurance wont cover it to be taken off by a plastic surgery as its only for cosmetic reason. I have heard of putting a thread around it and making a knot, each day tighten it till it falls down. has anyone done this?? or something else?

or perhaps is there a doctor that does it for a normal price?

thanks so much!

Why would you remove it? It's not dangerous to his health and it's the way HaShem made him. My brother has one on his ear. It's never caused him any trouble.

The string thing sounds like it could easily lead to an infection and scarring.

I have a few kids with skin tags near their ears. I left them on - honestly, no one notices.

my son was also born with it and at his first visit at the pediatrician he had the string put on, after about a wekk it come off.
It still left a small mark but nothing as bad as before- it was pretty strange looking.
My dr. said it had no risks (or maybe close to none).
He did it for free as part of being pediatrician but he's really nice!

My pedi told me to leave it as my daughter would grow it would get smaller. She is now turning 11, it is much smaller but she also just noticed it. I will take her to the dermatologist and have it removed if it is really bothering her in another year or so.

my son was born with one too. It actually fell off on its own one day. I would not do the string thing, it sounds horrific. Ask the pediatrician if he can remove it. A tiny ear tag does not require plastic surgery. They may be able to do it easily at the peds office. Usually the skin tag had little or no nerves, and doesn't hurt at all when squeezed

I had a small skin tag under my neck as a child and my parents kept tying string around it which only worked temporarily till eventually my pediatrician burnt it off. It took a second and had a little sting but that was it and ive never seen it since!

So there are different sizes/types of skin tags - just in case it's not obvious, definitely don't do anything to remove it on your own, not under the supervision of a doctor. Sometimes they can't "simply" be removed by tying a string because there could be underlying structural abnormalities as well.

My son is 1.5 and also has one. I saw a plastic surgeon (depending on how big it is - you don't want to just have a scar left behind, it won't look much better) and an ENT - both said they felt comfortable removing it (had to see them for other reasons so I just asked). [Btw, the plastic surgeon said it is very minor surgery, costs less than $500, just as an FYI]

I guess I'm a hypocrite since my ds is already 18 months but I'll just share my pediatrician's view - he felt, why not just take care of it before the child has any recollection about the process and before they can acknowledge the issue. Yes, we are all different and have to love ourselves for the way we are - but certain things (braces to fix our teeth, getting fashionable glasses, etc.) we do because we are supposed to feel like we "fit in" in society, to feel good about ourselves. And we want our children to feel the same way (if C"V a child was born with a cleft palate of-course we would fix it!)

It's a pretty individual decision - maybe a good idea to speak to you pediatrician about it?

amother here from 1:56pm - If it's something that you feel is really being noticed I would make an appointment with a good plastic surgeon or ENT. Keep in mind, that while the women on this board are amazing and take out the time to respond with advice and personal antidotes - each situation is so unique. If you're finding that your ds's skin tag IS prominent and is getting noticed it might be worth it to consult with a specialist. Possibly those who didn't do anything were dealing with less obvious skin tags (some get smaller with age but some do get bigger) - now's the time, as you wrote, before he starts cheder. Even if your pediatrician isn't concerned, you can get a referral to a specialist (and, just so you know, there are differing opinions on this matter, as I mentioned above - my pediatrician is all for taking care of skin tags ASAP before the child even realizes. B"H we live in a day and age where we don't have to "suffer" with such things and they are relatively easily taken care of).
