We have recently purchased a new computer with Windows 8. I tried downloading K9 but it doesn't seem like it'll work- specification says up to Windows 7. Any other free web filter out there we can try?

You can try the parental controls in Windows 8.

I have been helping someone with her new computer and it seems like there are no other good options at this time, though it's likely that many programs like K9 will update soon enough...but I would give the parental controls a try here as they are more advanced than any previous version of Windows.

Open DNS is good basic filter. It is network based. Once set up it applies to your entire home network and all devices on it.
