they recommended removal of adenoids and tonsils. I am waiting on it. ENT told me that if I wish to wait, we can, since some children do outgrow it.I would like to hear other opinions. this child is also prone to strep- am I wrong for waiting? wwyd?

I would probably go ahead with it, but definitely find a specialist who uses the coblation technique rather than simple dissection.

I appreciate this info very much! thanks! anymore info is greatly welcome. I guess because I told my ent that I'm nervous about surgery he said we can just wait and see and if I change my mind, I could call him (I use dr. ruffy and he is supposed to be the best in brooklyn). also, my ped said we can wait. he is also more natural minded. however, my child has extremely large adenoids and tonsils so when she gets a cold she really can't breathe.my ent was shocked at how large they were. although he did say that they can naturally shrink. she wakes up in the middle of the night a lot. but she does fabulous in school. she is a cheerful kid. if it was just the sleep apnea (moderate) I would maybe feel less nervous. but she catches strep a lot. and all these strep threads are making me nervous. and she confuses tired and hunger signals a lot. and she has gotten chubbier since this problem started.

just had my daughter's removed. its not even 2 full weeks and she stopped snoring at night. she is still waking up but its probably from the ear infection she got after surgery. we are down to 'only' once or twice a night!

I would get specific guidelines re. how long you can wait. I kept waiting, hoping my dd would outgrow, and, when finally I decided that the time had come, she was 14 and the doctor told us that now she would be out of school for a full two weeks and in quite a lot of pain. He said that the younger you do the surgery the quicker the recovery.

We decided not to do the surgery. Had I known this when she was younger, I would have done it then.

Just did surgery too.
My daughter had exactly what your daughter had. Was I nervous? Of course. But everyone told me it wasn't a big deal, that calmed me down.
We did the surgery, not the most pleasant thing on earth, took a few days until back to normal, but b"h there's a major change now! I'm so happy to be past it.

OP, I'm begging you to do the surgery. I have sleep Apnea, big adenoids, I'm always so uncomfortable. I'm actually upset my mother didn't ake care of it when I was a child.
I'm planning to go see an ENT and will very much consider removing my adenoids now, as it's really bothering me.

OP just curious, what led you to do a sleep study with your child?

also do they not use the CPAP machine for kids?

A cpap is more used for central apnea when its obstructive apnea its do to a blockge like tonsels and adiods and to correcte it you need to remove them

Where did you have the sleep study done? My daughter also has big adenoids and ent recommended removing them. my ped said to do a sleep study if I feel she's not sleeping well. If her sleep is fine he would not remove them. Her only symptom is a lot of coughing.

maimonedes hospital has a sleep clinic.my ent wrote us a prescription for a sleep study. he signed some sort of paper that I had to fax to the sleep clinic. clear it with your insurance whether you need pre-approval and whether it is covered. It IS considered part of the hospital and not an independent clinic. make sure to mention that to the insurance.

op here- the ent recommended removal of the tonsils and andenoids when he looked at them and based upon what I told him about my child's sleep habits. but just to make sure he sent me for a sleep study to confirm what he suspected. he thought it was moderate sleep apnea - and it was. I'm so nervous for surgery. It's like a pit in my stomach just thinking about it. how am I going to explain this to my child. I just wish I knew what the right choice for her was.

We did this with our now five year old when he was three. It was also moderate apnea and he had huge tonsils. We had an amazing doctor who did a procedure called partial removal which has a much shorter recovery and virtually no bleeding. Truthfully we did not see a major change in behavior but definitely no more snoring and his hearing improved. We are now doing it with our for year old daughter... :-( not sure if it really would have resolved itself.

What type of behavior are you referring to? What were the symptoms?

op here- my child's behavior during the day is just fine. she wakes up between 1-3 times at night. on a really bad night she can wake up 5 times. she snores. she complains she can't breathe. but during the day she is happy and cheerful. but she eats more to compensate for her tiredness. before she falls asleep she always tells me how starving she is and I know she ate enough supper, but I feel it's because her tired and hungry signals get crossed.

All of my children had their tonsils out between 3-4yrs old. It can take a while for them to feel better, but it was worth while. I had mine out as an adult and it was awful. It was much much easier for my children.
