This is not for my kid, but I wanted to put it in a forum that allows anon posting just in case.

I'm trying to help out a boy whose summer plans just fell through. He is 12 years old and what you'd call "at risk" - he is really a good kid, not a troublemaker, but has various issues and a slightly complicated background so if left to his own devices he likely wouldn't end up anywhere good. His parents are not interested in sending him to camp due to cost. Plus, I have no idea how you even get into camp at this time of year, especially with this kind of background.

Due to the kiruv-type nature of the situation, I thought of BoyZone but for various reasons he thinks it wouldn't be a good fit, and anyway I hear it's not easy to get a space there.

Help?! I don't have kids this age yet so I really have no clue how to go about this but I don't think anyone else is going to bat for this kid so I thought I'd toss out the question here and see how far I can get...?

They are other kiruv oriented camps -- the Camp Nageela network. I am only familiar (and even then only slightly) with the one here in the Midwest, but they are all over the country.

jewish federations help out with some camps - but there are criteria

there's a huge variety of camps ... what background does he fall into ... some camp scholarships help with kids in their communities - or like-minded communities ... nonetheless call a camp directly & ask ...

usually they need a letter of reference from a rav or teacher & also a hardship letter explaining why this is important for said boy and/or family

have you checked

Thanks for the leads. The kid DOES need an occupation for the summer, and wants one too.
