Theatre is more of an outing, a trip ... something fun which generally we try to avoid in the 9 days.
Truthfully we rarely, if ever, go to the theatre anyway here.
But we do watch movies at home, more like TV shows but its a regular part of our night so nothing changes.

You didn't specify what type of movie. What matters is the content, not the format. It would be perfectly fine to go to the biggest theater in town to watch a documentary about the Holocaust.

Why don't you ask all those people who 'hold' this way throughout the year what the difference is.

For me it's like written above, a theater is an event. It's special. It's different. That said, I don't watch a lot of movies at home (ever); I don't have patience to sit through most. Much more of a tv person. Yes, I do watch tv during the 9 days.

Yes I do. I try to skip the songs and musicals. There are some pretty sad movies out there by lifetime dvd.

I try to take myself away from the shtuss-shows I watch a lot (Gossip Girl, etc..) at least for the 9 days, but on Tisha B'Av I watch Holocaust movies.
