Scenario.
I worked full time with three kids (one a newborn) and just got laid off.
I am trying to figure out if my uneployment check plus foodstamps will be more than my 'potential' income minus day care expenses.
How do I find out how much foodstamps a family of five gets?
Is there anyone who can give me an approximate amount so I can make an informed decision.

I think it depends on your state, but I'm not sure. Some states have an on-line calculator that allows you to estimate how much aid you are eligible for, and in what amounts. Your children may also be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance from your state, if you need that too.

I tried the online calculator and it said I ca get a maximum of $793 per month.
Can a person really get that much?

It's possible. Depends on your income.
You need to include your unemployment check as your income.

Even if your foodstamps (+ unemployment) > take home wages, it won't help with other expenses just because you can spend a lot of $ on food...

unemployment counts towards income and it causes you to be illegible to much less. When I was on unemployment I was only illegible to like $96 and after I finished unemployment I was illegible to over $600. were a family of 5

Before applying for food stamps in NJ I used the calculator and I did end up receiving about the amount it stated. Unemployment income won't reduce your expense dollar for dollar though (that is, $100 in UI doesn't reduce your eligibility $100). The calculator assumes your available income is reduced by your housing/ utility expense (up to a maximum), then calculates a fixed percentage of your remaining income as available for food.

I live in NJ and received a letter saying we are eligible for food stamps.

I received the letter 2 weeks ago and have not received a card.

There is a number listed to call but it is impossible to get through.

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive the card after approval?
