There are 2 men in our family that still need to be named after, Eliyahu and Yeshayahu.
I know that Eliyahu translates to Elijah but neither myself or my husband *feel* that name and we definitely want to call our child by their english name.
any other suggestions?
any suggestions for an english translation of Yeshayahu?

Also, if its a girl, any hebrew names that mean sweet or could be used as the opposite of bitter (first name would be Mindel which translates to bitter sea)

THANKS!

For Eliyahu:
Elias
Ellis
Elliot
Alan (vowel then "L" sound, like E-LI-yahu)
Liam ("li" then "a" sound, like e-LI-A-hu)

For Yeshayahu:
In English it's Isaiah.
Root is similar to Yehoshua, G-d is my salvation. ("Joshua" in English) Also Hoshea.
Phonetically sounds like Yishai ("Jesse") and Shai, but those come from the root for gift, not salvation.

My son's legal name is Eliyahu.

If it really bothers you to keep a completely phonetic name that EVERYONE can pronounce--seriously--doctors, my coworkers--everyone has heard of his name and says it just fine, why don't you just put Eli on his birth certificate?

Eli will be forever pronounced as e-lie. Drives me crazy lol.
In an Anglo country I would change the spelling, I think.

I think the OP wanted a similar type English name and Eli kind of solves that. If you want, you can correct people and say it is pronounced as "Eli Wiesel" or as in the start of Eliot but you don't have to spend his life correcting people if you don't want to.
