yes, split the dough ans add 1tbsp of cocoa and mix. braid and enjoy

my daughter made these for a school shabbos. They went to Weiss Bakery and they gave them pumpernickel syrup to add to half of the dough.

Cocoa is one trick. The original idea, I think, was done with whole wheat flour. In other words, two separate batches of dough, one with regular flour and one with whole wheat.
