After reading the thread about many here hating Windows 8, I know I want Windows 7, and I know I want at least 4GB, and I know I want a well priced computer. Im pretty clueless with specs/features. All I know is that I want a user-friendly laptop thats well priced, for its kind.

I was on chat with someone at Tigerdirect.com who had very little to offer me with Windows 7. Most computers have Windows 8.

Ive had Dell in the past, and while Im not married to Dell, I think if I can find a laptop at a good price Id buy Dell. Their 3 year extended warranty that I added at purchase time really paid off and thats why I like Dell.

This is the computer recommended by the Tigerdirect person, because it has Windows 7, but its not a Dell its HP.

Any opinions?

Tiger Direct doesn't have the greatest reputation.

I'd consider something like this:
http://www.staples.com/Dell-In.....12241

Oops, sorry, just saw you want a laptop. This one is a very good desktop deal.

Really? I'm not an expert, but we've bought a few things over the years from Tiger Direct and never had any problems. I'm not saying you can't find cheaper elsewhere, but I definitely wouldn't hesitate to buy from them if they had what I was looking for. As far as deals, it's always good to check Dans Deals for laptop deals, also Slickdeals (you can enter "laptop" in the search bar to see what's been posted recently). Windows 7 will be tough to come by though and will severely limit your options (though I don't blame you for not wanting 8).

I didn't study them in depth, but I'd go with the first one. The first question is: do you want 15" or 17"? To me, 17" just feels huge, especially when the trend today is toward smaller. If you're never ever going to move it and want the larger screen, then maybe 17" could be justified. But it will be much heavier and harder to fit into bags if you plan on moving it or taking it with you. Between the two 15" I don't see any reason to justify the extra cost; they have the same exact processor and amount of RAM. The cheaper one actually has a larger hard drive (750 vs 500 GB). The expensive one has some widescreen graphics, but I don't know what that is and don't think it justifies an extra $50. Hope that helps! Also look around online for Staples coupons to save even more.

Thanks so much! Theres at least one thing that the 578072 $549 model has that the cheaper doesnt. It can take up to 16g and has 4g intel core turbo boost chip, which has some speed advantage. But the cheapest one of the three, the $499 one, stays powered from the battery for 6 hours, the others run for only 4 hours per charge, because theyre more loaded.

I did see that the more expensive one could get up to 16 gb of ram, but be honest, are you really planning to do it? IIRC I think the other one can take up to 6 or 8, which is more than enough. And I must have missed the turbo boost, but unless you're doing professional video editing or playing hard-core games, I really don't think you'll notice it. The extra 2 hours of battery life will be much more valuable for the average user.

Not reading the whole thread, no time, but just interjecting here: Make sure it has a DVD/CD drive...my brand new laptop has a dummy drive and when I tried to put a DVD in for my kids, it wouldn't open. Turns out it actually doesn't come with it because (they claim) no one uses it anymore due to streaming these days. I was furious but it was too late to return.
