I mistakenly spilled soup on my son's briefcase. (Nobody was hurt bh.) Do you think I can wash it in the washing machine?

It depends what it's made from. If it has a stiff piece of cardboard at the back, this will disintegrate. I wouldn't put the type that has "feet" that can stand up in the machine either.
When I buy new bags for my kids I allow them to choose only from the kinds that look as if they will wash well. Schoolbags get disgusting so quickly - I throw them in the wash about once a month.

I agree. Try hosing it off with warm water and some baby shampoo. Blot it dry with a bath towel.
