Doctor Seuss's birthday was yesterday. I just learned from this article I posted that he had some great lines I never knew about. When people weren't including the Grinch in their festivities, he writes:

"It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small."
-How the Grinch Stole x-mas

He has lots of great lines, but these may be his best. Anyone else have favorite Dr. Seuss lines?

I don't know about lines, but my favorite Dr. Suess book is Nothing Ever Happens On Mulberry Street.

These are the ones I find myself quoting the most often:

"Somebody, somebody has to, you see"

"And this mess is so big and so deep and so tall we cannot pick it up, there is no way at all"

"I meant what I said and I said what I meant"

"You can come by zike bike, if you like"

"I don't know, go ask your dad"

From "The Pale Green Pants":

'I said, “I do not fear those pants
With nobody inside them.”
I said, and said, and said those words.
I said them. But I lied them.'

One of his best books is "Oh the Places You Will Go".

Some of the best lines from there:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”

“And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!”

“You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't.
Because, sometimes, you won't.”

This book is amazingly brilliant. Unfortunately, I've never owned it. I would love to get to know it by heart.

Can't forget the Sneetches:

"But McBean was quite wrong. I’m quite happy to say.
That the Sneetches got really quite smart on that day.
The day they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches.
And no kind of Sneetch is the best on the beaches.
That day, all the Sneetches forgot about stars
And whether they had one, or not, upon thars."

and one of them Bodkin van Horne
and one of them Hoosfoos
And one of the stinky
and one of them stuffy
and one of them blinky

One buffalo biff
and one biffalo buff

(23 sons of Mrs. McCabe)

and now he was happy, 100 percent
(Horton)

and that's why I'm bothering telling you so
(The Sleep Book)

What would you do if your mother asked you?

It is clear from this thread that there is no excuse
To be left unimpressed by our dear Dr Seuss
For his great use of language and clever ideas
Will remain in your brain for innumerable years!

Two of my favorites (my memory might be slightly off, because our Seuss collection is at school right now as part of a classroom Dr. Seuss birthday celebration):

And the turtles? Why, all of the turtles are free;
As turtles (and maybe all creatures) should be.

And:

Some houses are rich
Filled with silver and gold
And some houses are poor,
Sort of empty and old;
But whether they're wide, or whether they're thin,
They're all, all alike when a friend asks you in.
And wherever you go,
You will hear someone say,
"Come over to my house;
Come over and play!"

Oh, and of course,
A person's a person, no matter how small.
