Dh and I do not like vinegar nor mustard, nor balsamic vinegar.
I see so many salad dressings that include one of the above.
I generally just use oil or oil and lemon or once in a while mayo (gasp!) but it's kinda boring.
Any ideas or recipes please?
oh, and I strongly dislike bottled dressings

You can modify plain vinaigrette as follows.
1 part orange juice (pref fresh squeezed from 1/2 orange but regular OJ will do)
1 part lemon juice
1 part olive oil
season with salt, ground pepper or a bit of cumin.
This goes nicely with regular leafy salad or with shredded fennels or radishes.

Oriental carrot and ginger dressing

Saute 1 or 2 peeled and grated carrots in 3 tbsp olive oil. Add a little salt and pepper. Turn off the heat and add 2 tsp grated root ginger. Mix together in a jar with 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp orange juice and 2 tbsp rice vinegar. Cover, shake well and pour over salad or plain steamed vegetables.

You can skip rice vinegar or substitute with lemon juice or orange juice.
Personally I like rice vinegar because it's mellower and less harsh.

Yes, try rice vinegar, it's yummy.

Get to work on the herbs. Buy lots of different kinds and get to know them. Herbs, herbs, herbs. See what you think of caraway seeds. For a milk meal, crumble cheese onto the salad.

If you have a sunny windowsill, grow some chives to snip into the salad.

It is nice to put raisins in a salad. Also apple cut into bite size chunks, skin left on. Some put orange segments in.

I wish somebody would post what to do with mint in a salad.

I just saw this and want to try it....squeeze lemon juice into bowl add in thyme and crushed fresh garlic...I'm also trying to stay away from using oil and mayo (my dressings are all usually mayo based)

Thanks for your link.

Sorry to sound thick, but what exactly is a bulb of garlic? Is that a clove?

ha I think I meant to write clove ... which is one piece ... but freudian slip would have it that way because I surely use a bulb of garlic or close

You can chop or tear them finely and use it for making tabouli with parsley, bulgher, onion, tomato and cucumber. It also goes nicely with cucumber salad or Israeli salad.
