Open shelves are not an option because little kids keep emptying them out.
Keeping books behind doors kind of defeats the purpose of the bookcase - I'd want the books to be visible and easily accessible.
Dining room/serving stuff is not an option bec. it is already kept on the bottom of the breakfront.
Thank you all for your ideas!

Behind closed doors:
albums-something you want kept nicely but out of way from little fingers.
toys that have been outgrown or out of circulation
Open shelved: Kids toys--so they know where they go and can put them back.

Kids books won't work because they won't be seen or used by kids. If you mean they should be on open bottom shelves- then it's a major problem when little ones pull them out, scatter and/or rip them to shreds non-stop.
Open shelves with toys turns into a permanent mess- 1-2 y.o. know how to scatter them 100 times a day, not how to put them back once.
Albums is a great idea, need more ideas cause there's more space than albums ))
Hence the question remains.
