B'H we are planning an evening simcha with about 100 people. Since there are many children and picky eaters I would like to consider a buffet style rather than a sit down 3 course meal. Is buffet more expensive or less expensive than a sit-down meal? DH likes the idea of small individual portion of foods laid out on buffet but I'm worried if it ends up being more expensive or if guests would feel there aren't enough food.
I'm also toying with an idea of doing parve(fish) or milky menu. Is it frowned upon for an evening simcha? Would I save money if I don't serve meat?
I'm really clueless about budgeting. How much should I assume per person in tri-state area? Do caterers charge for other things like cutlery or glassware or drinks? Anything else I should be aware of and ask caterers before we choose one?

Buffet is a lot cheaper than sit down. We did a motzei shabbos milchig buffet. It was a come and go. We had a sushi station which was a huge hit. There were small tables to sit down. We had a one man band and the boys danced away. We also got some shtick such as cute hats and ties. It was really nice but different than a whole sit down meal but then again who has patience for those anyways!

I am not sure that buffet is really cheaper. You save on wait staff, but caterers need to put out a lot more food. With sit-down you can control portion size.
