Closet doorway narrower than closet itself

I have a deep closet that is also pretty wide but the doorway is narrow. I'd love to just use the hanging part that's visible from the doorway so that nothing gets pushed and forgotten to the side. What kind of organizing can I do with the other side though??? I can't do sideways drawers because the hanging clothing will prevent them from opening and I can't do front facing drawers because you can't really access it from the doorway of the closet. Any ideas of what I can use that space for to make it more functional??

You can use the harder-to-reach sections to store off-season things.

I have the open shelves (sideways) in a different closet (without a narrower doorway- just the way the closet was designed) and find that the stuff further back in the closet on the shelves tends to get lost since you can't really access it. I know that I can store out of season things and things like that but I'd love to find a way to make it more useful.

but you got me thinking- maybe forward facing shelves with big open baskets/bins that can be taken off the shelf and then have things taken out of it, like with sweaters or kids underwear... thanks! any other ideas?

That's basically what I do. It's pretty annoying, though - I would say if you're going to live there for a good length of time you should consider whether it's possible to break down the wall and install a bigger/sliding door. That's what I would have done except we rent in an apartment building with strict policies where expanding your closet door is tantamount to breaking down the building and requires a ridiculous and expensive approval process.

break out the frame & take off the door ... open the walls & put in supports - then hang a curtain across - now your closet is wider

you can eventually put sliding doors should you wish

you could remove the pole and set up two poles perpendicular to the original position. on on each side of the door. then you could walk between the poles to access the clothing towards the back.
