There might be times that I say it, but in general not really, but I think I came to be like that after living where I live for too long. If I do say it, I usually say it so low, the other person probably can't hear me.

Same here... I'm always the one saying excuse me, I'm so sorry. Many times people respond why are you sorry?? Would be nice if more people were like that. I've had the opposite experience in certain places unfortunately.

I'm the same way. I am always apologizing. but the truth is, it comes out so much nicer that way! "I'm so sorry, I really need to get through, would you please excuse me? Thanks!"

I think I'm sorry is pretty appropriate in that situation, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. You could also say "Sure!" with a smile (as in "Excuse me, may I pass" "Sure!")

In the circs you describe, "sorry" is a figure of speech and in no way implies guilt or wrongdoing. As seeker says, it's more like a green light signaling "Sure thing, go ahead", than an abject "Please forgive your worthless servant for stupidly, nay, criminally, standing in the path where Your Magnificence wishes to walk."

Over Yom Tov I was apologizing so much that I started thinking that I need to go for assertiveness training
