I had oral surgery yesterday

I paid a private dr 4000 shekel for this. (which to me is a big amount to come up with - to this dr. it's probably play money after seeing his prices and the time he gives for them)

Now the dr. could not even give me the proper time for this.

as he is numbing me he is chatting in the phone. (and I'm sitting there waiting to start and he keeps answering his phone) His helper is the secretary who is answering the phone while helping. When dr. is done he runs off to mincha telling me he will be back in 10 minutes and I had to wait to pay and get a prescription and instructions.

Is this considered normal? Is it fair to a patient to talk on the phone?
I really felt it was wrong. I paid a huge price and he couldn't even give me the full 2 hours he needed undivided.
I hope he did a good job - I have no way of knowing now.

I think you know the answer. Not only is it rude, it is dangerous. In the US, I think it is illegal.

When you go back for a follow up, why don't you say something?

I wasn't sure if I should say something.

I didn't want to before I'm done with him and I need to go back next week to get my stitches out.

Is there any gain in saying anything?

I don't think it's so polite, but it's certainly common these days for doctors to chat on the phone while treating patients. Not while his hand is in your mouth, of course (!), but while waiting for your local anesthetic to take, etc. -- very common. Everyone's multitasking in the current age of cellphones, etc.

no it was while giving me the anesthetic

I think it's extremely rude -- why do I have to wait while he picks up the phone

It's quite obnoxious and completely unprofessional. But you knew that already.
