How do I know if these are mice or rats? They were running around my back yard last night, maybe newborn rats, ugh, and then I saw them head into the garage. They crawled right under my garage door, what chutzpah! But my real question is: How do I get rid of them? Is there any safe poison that won't be harmful to children? Would mothballs work? Any rat poison that is safe for kids? I am trying to avoid an exterminator, but I MUST get rid of these things NOW. They scare me and I'm afraid they'll soon find their way into the house

use the cage kind of trap - put in some tuna as bait. Place them by a wall or passageway, not in the middle of the garage.
The cage kind of trap does not harm the animal, so once you catch it you have to decide what to do with it. We brought our rat to the state park nearby to join the local food chain.
