What are you going to be using it for. Maybe a Ipad or tablet will serve your purpose better for a lot less

What are you going to be using it for? Most basic laptops are good enough to do word processing. Web browsing. Basic stuff should be much cheaper. How much is the 3 year warranty adding to the total? Do they really cover everything?

Thanks a mil for answering!

My laptop is going going gone.

I use it for internet, and occassionally Youtube...but I heavily use it... its on 24/6 and used all the time. I have a habit of going back and forth on 6 websites at a time...I need word...otherwise pretty basic use. I dont use it for games.

I dont think an Ipad would be right bec I dont take it places and I like the 15" screen.

On another thread someone mentioned that they bought at Microcenter.com and here are computers that are Windows 7 8gb for much less... of course these dont have the extended warranty or word included.

Any techies out there? Please.....

TIA

Thanks. The better 3 yr warranty where they cover software and in home repair when needed, is about $200. and if one thing breaks in 3 years, its well worth it.

That seems really expensive. I bought a Lenovo a few months ago for under $600 and I'm very happy with the performance. It has 4GB of RAM, not 8, but for what you're doing with it you really don't need the extra memory - having lots of tabs open in a website doesn't stress the computer that much. If you'd be doing graphics, or video editing, or serious gaming, you would want the extra RAM, but it doesn't seem that crucial for your needs.

Even if you want the extra RAM, though, that price seems very excessive. Keep looking around, you can probably find a better deal.

Windows 7 is MUCH harder to get a discount on as there are few left with it, but the demand is higher because Windows 8 is soooo different.

Intel 4th generation is amazing, but that is a bit more than previous generations' processors...

Microsoft Office Home and Business is not standard, that added a couple hundred to the price probably.

The year of virus protection adds to the price.

What software did you add?

When I go to dell.com and put in that model and build it up using Windows 7, Office Home and Business, extended warranty, virus protection, etc I'm getting well under $1000 still though -- http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspi.....SW12M

After speaking to computer-knowledgable relatives, they tell me to get a cheaper computer and replace it when it goes. They say I can add a cheap Word and they recommend buying this HP for $699 and I should add $99 for 3 years of Square trade: (Opinions please)

http://www.costco.com/HP-Pavilion-15t-Laptop-|-Intel-Core-i5-|-Windows-7-Professional.product.100112795.html

Processor & Memory:

4th generation Intel® Core™ i5-4200U Processor (1.6 GHz)
8GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm)

Drives:

1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive
SuperMulti DVD Burner

Operating System:

Microsoft® Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)

Communications:

802.11b/g/n WLAN
Integrated 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector)
HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone

Graphics & Video:

15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
Intel HD Graphics

Any reason to go for the Dell?

TIA

No, that looks like it has great specs. I would also skip getting MS Office. I use OpenOffice on my Windows installs for free.

Thanks a mil. I was just a bit hesitant bec HP Pavillion doesnt have that great ratings on Consumer Reports. But I think Ill go for it anyhow bec I can return it easily and Ive heard Costco is good with satisfying customers.

It's a good deal, nice price for really good specs with Windows 7, which is increasingly hard to find.

Costco will give you two years of customer support when you buy from them. I got a desktop there a few years ago. Didn't need the support, but it's nice to know it's there.

I also will second the recommendation for Open Office instead of Word. I edit and write professionally and I left Word behind a few years ago in favor of Open Office. It's worked perfectly for me and it's free.
