I believe my 7 yo. ds has adhd. There was a thread about drs for for evaluating and diagnosis in brooklyn with lots of helpful info. I'm thinking if I can find someone local it would be a bit easier than driving in. By now I don't think I even need someone to tell me that he is adhd. I need medication+help for him. Any relevant info about a dr/psychiatrist/tharapist would really be appreciated.

I would bring him to get tested by Dr. Hassan in Flatbush. He has these special computers to test for ADHD. Then, once I have the diagnoses, I would see someone locally for the prescription refill.

Rabbi Dr Richard Price Bikur Cholim. He takes insurance including Medicaid. He can proscribe and most important he tells you when to stop.

Hi it's op here.
I feel so lost. I don't know what to do or to whom to turn to. I wish someone would be able to guide me a bit and share the things that worked for them like, this was helpful/a waste of time this doctor is good... I have no experience. ( I hope my experience won't come in handy for my other children) I wish I could walk up to some people I know and ask them what they did but it ain't happening. Walking up to acquaintances and saying a PC version of "your child was nuts and hyper and is doing so much better now, what did you do?" won't go over well. Everyone keeps thing really quiet for the the same reason I guess I do to. I don't want my child to me known as the child with issues and medication. Although it's so much more common it's still taboo. I hope as things work out it won't be obvious to all the new people he meets.
So basically (as I see someone replied a while after) I took my soon to Dr. Hassan in November because I didn't know what else to do and we needed to change things or else...😤 He diagnosed him with ADHD and put him on medication. He is doing a lot better but I'm really second guessing my decision.
1) getting there is extremely complicated. Getting a babysitter, taking him out of school for a whole day so often...
2)he was diagnosed using the computer test and a couple of questions. Now I keep reading about and thinking maybe he needed a full phsyc eval. Maybe he has other problems and not or not only ADHD. Did anyone else use Dr. Hassan and was happy with his diagnoses?
3) he didn't recommend therapy. Is it ok to have your child on meds without seeing a therapist or definitely not the norm.

So I'm imamother that wrote to see dr hassan and then do local. Dr hassan doesn't talk much. He does endorse therapy together with meds though. They have a therapist in the office. If u as a parent want him to see a therapist, I would suggest contacting bikur cholim. U can get the prescription from dr price and see s/o there as well. Like this u wont keep traveling to flatbush so often.

Is ur child doing better on meds? Is his/her prob that s/he can't focus for a decent period of time? Contrary to what ppl think, I dont think it's abt how hyper ur kid is. Its about not having good executive functioning...
Can u tell us what exactly are the symptoms?

No no no.

ADHD can look like a lot of other things, but if a professional is just looking to confirm ADHD then that's what they will find. For an evaluation, you need to see a professional with a broad range of expertise in pediatric development to make a differential diagnosis (that means consider all the possibilities given his developmental profile and rule each one out one at a time until you are left with a diagnosis). My recommendation would be to look for a great pediatric neuropsychologist. Your pediatrician might have a referral for you.

Remember: Evaluation = broad expertise; treatment = specialist
