Which sewing machine to buy and where?

What is a good recommended sewing machine? Need it for alterations and ocassional outfits. Good for all type fabrics. I have plenty sewing experience but haven't sewn in bout 10 yrs. yet have not forgotten how yo sew. I'm not looking to spend alot on a machine. Is there something good out there for $150-$200 or I must spend more? I want something durable, not trashy. I can always buy something more expensive later on if I see I use the current one alot. Also where is a good place to buy one? Online or in NY?

I recommended Brother to another poster on the same topic.

Brother has Laura Ashley line CX155LA for under $250. Amazon has rave reviews on this machine.

Someone mentioned to me the "brother XL 2600i" costs about $90-100. But didn't have time to google it yet for reviews. If u do so let me know. Thanks.
