If you create a free gmail account you can create basic word documents, spreadsheets, etc. that you can email as attachments.

I've used Open Office, it can do a lot but is not nearly as user-friendly as Microsoft Office if you're used to that. None of the automatic presets that make things look pretty easily. Nowadays I mostly use Google drive/docs when I'm using my computer that doesn't have MS Office, and I kvetch to borrow DH's computer that has Office 2010 when I have anything serious to work on.

If you're looking for google docs, open up the google page and go to apps. Then click on the "drive" one. There will be a link to create a document. They are stored online, which makes them very easy to share (although they aren't automatically shared), but you do need to have internet access to work with them. If you want to be able to work offline, and have the documents on your computer and not in the cloud, then I use Open Office. It may not be quite as nice as MS Word, but it's a whole lot cheaper.
