I recently had a discussion with a friend about who do you trust online. She said - never trust anyone. Well what about facebook? Everyone uses their real name. We all have hundreds of friends who each have hundreds of friends... we post pictures, where we live... I've looked up people on facebook when I wanted to know about them and I assume people have done the same to me. Well, I'm not posting my bank account# or my ss#... So what harm is done? I post info about myself here on imamother and other people do too. We don't post every single detail but we also don't lie and make up facts about ourselves. So are we safe here? Better than FB?

Just curious how much is necessary to protect yourself?

The truth is most of us probably share way too many private details on here.

Do you think everyone is who they say they are here? I'm not talking about some 15 year old boy hanging out in the intimacy section, but maybe someone claiming IVF problems for info for an article they're writing, or someone claiming they're divorced to see how to be a better therapist... Or whatever reasons. Does it really matter if someone lies about who the are? Should we all?

Someone who asks this question, doesn't belong online!

Me? What do you mean? I don't lie about myself but I also don't tell much

I don't either understand what that's supposed to mean.

There are people that make themselves seem like they're someone they're not - not sure why, maybe so you'll respect them, maybe it's fantasy of who they want to be... So they'll tell you something like they live in Lakewood when hey don't, but that will get everyone to assume they're a certain chassidish and then you'll take their advice, or they'll tell you they have 5 kids under 5 so they'll have more authority in discussions. Can't think of an example without hitting on exactly what it is. That's what I mean. You don't have to tell anything about yourself but there are people who make up things about themselves. That's what I mean about lie which is why I ask if you trust people on line?

I meant to say that I didn't understand IMHopinions response. I understand your question, sorry for the confusion.
