Just wanted to add the kids are very young (preschool age) and a recommendation of a nice park with a great playground would be fine, doesn't need to be a fancy attraction (but better than our typical neighborhood park)

Pier C park in Hoboken. Its about 15-20 minutes away though.

The Newark Museum is actually quite nice. It's no Natural History Museum, but for little kids, it's sufficient. There's a one-room schoolhouse in the courtyard that is quite interesting.
