I was listening to a shiur about Elul/Rosh Hashana and the speaker quotes from the zohar that roses have 13 "alim". (related to the pasuk in shir hashirim אני לדודי ודודי לי הרואה בשושנים "ani ledodi vedodi li haroeh bashoshanim")
"alim" in modern day Ivrit can mean leaves (alim) or petals (aley koteret).
Does anyone know if this is true, botanically?

The number of leaves and of petals of roses is not fixed.

Not botanically correct, but then "shoshana" can be translated as "rose" (in modern lingo, "vered" is a rose) or "lily"--and lilies for sure do not have 13 petals. Then again, who knows what species of flower the Biblical "shoshana" really was?
