Horrible kettle-HELP PLS!!

My kettle is full of scale-horrible white bits.. yuk!! how do I clean it? I have tried boiling it up with vinegar a few times.. Pls advise on how to clean it out-and keep it clean! Oh and also for my big shabbos urn too.. though that's not too gross bH..

We use citric acid aka lemon salt boiled then allow to cool. May need to rinse and repeat a few times if it's a bad case.

What she said. The process is know as descaling.

Thanks! What is lemon salt? I should buy citric acid from a store? how much? diluted with water?

It's in the baking/spices section of the grocery store. Fill up the urn, add like 1/4 cup of the citric acid (also called lemon salt, same thing) and bring the water to a boil. Let it sit for an hour or two. Rinse, repeat.

No way to keep it clean. The limescale builds up periodically because the water is hard where you live. You just have to descale at regular intervals, unless you install a water softening system.
BTW I use vinegar and it works like a charm - I wonder why it didn't work for you?

there is something that you buy and leave in the kettle or urn to prevent scale build up.And you replace it every so often.

chani 8-I look for a spice called lemon salt? don't think I've ever seen in there.. citric acid is by the hygiene stuff or baking stuff?
