Another vote for train tracks and trains. My almost three year old can play with them for hours. We have one set of tracks and about four trains - did not cost a fortune. He will play with his Matchbox cars on the tracks also. It's an amazing toy for him, and wonderfully non-muktzah.

Thank you every single poster, I really appreciated each reply.
I bought a couple mentchies, a little playmobile set, and a little construction set lego. He has two sets of train tracks, both are muktza. Maybe I should take out batteries? That would be good idea...
Regarding playmates, yes, I do need to arrange that for him...
