I'd like to try a manicure today. I never go for one.

Teach me the basics please!

I'm in Brooklyn, do most places need an appt or just walk in?
Do they ask any questions that will make me look like a dummy?
Do they give you any options or choices I should be educated at?

What's the approximate cost?

Most salons take walk-ins. Call the one you want to go to to verify that.
You'll have to pick a polish color and you can tell them whether you want your cuticles trimmed or pushed back.
It should cost somewhere around $8-$15 for a regular manicure, depending on where you go.

Enjoy!

Leaving aside artificial nails, there are 3 basic types of manicures:

GEL COLOR. This lasts anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks, and is cured under a UV lamp. Its the most expensive. Gel color is removed by soaking a cotton ball in acetone and covering it in foil, to keep it in contact with the nail.

ONE WEEK COLOR. Which may or may not last a week. It is removed with regular nail polish remover.

REGULAR POLISH. Which lasts about 15 minutes on me, but for a week on some people. Its the least expensive.

There may also be a spa manicure, where they massage your hands and put on a deep moisturizer. Its also more expensive.

You go in, tell them the type of manicure you want. Choose your color. They'll ask if you want your nails cut, and whether you want them squared or rounded. You may be asked to wash your hands after they file and push back your cuticles. Unless you get the gel color, you'll be taken to a drying table afterwards, to help your nails dry.

Enjoy.

Its common to tip after a manicure. (approx $2)
they may ask if you want square or round fingernails, if they should cut your fingernails.
You may want to pay before they put on the polish so that you don't ruin it when sifting through your big.
Wait long enough for the polish to really dry.
Enjoy.

Thanks so much this is all so helpful!

Which is nicer square or round? And trimmed cuticles or pushed back?

Slightly rounded is nicer in my opinion. Pushed back cuticles is less risky, hygienically. It's a matter of preference, though.

Op here, with some more questions:

Do I wait in the store until it dries? Or do I walk the streets with my nails in the air? LOL

Also, can I take my little baby along in a stroller, or do they not appreciate that?

The fumes in a nail salon are not healthy for a small baby (or anyone else, but especially a small baby). Also, if the baby cries or needs something you won't be able to take care of him while they're working on you.

I like rounded nails with the cuticles pushed back.

Choose a nail color from the display before you sit down at the manicure table. You can choose 2 different ones and have them apply one on one nail and if you don't like like it, they'll wipe it off and use the other.
