It may be HaAdamah.

Why is cooked rice Mezonos anyway?

Haadamah would be the other opinion, because its steamed, not cooked. The artscroll brachos book says mezonos definitely, but other sources disagree. Its likely that different people in your family were taught differently.

I remember learning as kid:
"amen"=orez-mezonos-nefashos (borei nefashos)

Thank you! I'm the one who learned it was HaAdamah, but I can't remember from where. Oh well, as long as someone else (animeme!) has heard of it, then I'm covered. Wink

I know that cooked rice is mezonos (and borai nefashos), but anyone know why?

I learned haadamah since it is popped and not boiled.

It's a machloka. I grew up saying mezonos but since it's a shaala dh first says mezonos on a cracker/cookie, then ha'adama on a veg, and then eats his rice. We do say mezonos on rice cake though.

See this: Rice Cakes on Brochos.com

Not necessarily the final answer -- but gives the different opinions. Obviously you need to AYLOR for the opinion you personally should follow.

Thanks for posting that link. Now I see which book I learned it from. Wink

I was told rice that's cooked but separate piece (ex fried rice etc) it's haadama

If the rice is clumped tog then it's mezonos

We say hoadama on rice cakes. It's how they're prepared. They aren't cooked. If you have a chance to get to Tzomet Bar Ilan in Jerusalem there is a pitzuchim store that has a rice cake maker. They are pressure steamed. If you were to eat uncooked rice it would also be ho'adama. It just hasn't cooked enough to be mezonos.
Hope this helps.

ETA Cooked rice is mezonos because it is a k'ilu grain. It has many characteristics of grain but is not one of the five.

According to other opinions (Chabad) it is shehakol.

Thanks for the replies! I enjoyed this discussion. Lymnok, your post was very helpful. I shared this thread with my family, too. And I'm glad to see I was in good company with Chabad at those times when I got frustrated about which bracha to make and just made a shehakol. lol. Now I'm comfortable again making HaAdama, and I won't grimace if my family members make mezonos, because they have who to hold by too. Wink
